Improve employee retention rates by prioritizing mental health and well-being

Employers who offer mental health benefits, and a safe and supportive working environment, often experience higher rates of employee engagement, loyalty, and job satisfaction. In this article, we list three approaches that address and improve employee retention rates.

1. Identify and address employee burnout

  • Encourage employees to take frequent breaks during the course of the workday.
  • Create distraction-free environments in which employees may work uninterrupted.
  • Establish remote work boundaries that help employees.
  • Train managers and supervisors to lead with empathy and emotional intelligence.
  • When your employees finish demanding work tasks (cognitive, emotional, or physical), enable them to switch to simpler tasks for a certain duration so they may regain balance.

2. Enhance employee benefits with mental health and well-being options

  • Primary health-care with sufficient mental-health coverage.
  • Onsite mental health care and programs.
  • Workplace practices that support a healthy work-life balance.
  • Stress management and burnout prevention education and techniques.
  • Access to mental-health apps.
  • Ongoing education about mental-health awareness.

3. Integrate mental health and well-being into organizational culture

  • Communicate clearly mental-health and wellness benefits, programs, and policies, as well as how to obtain help and resources when needed.
  • Set aside time for enjoyable activities that facilitate employee bonding outside the (in-person or virtual) workplace and provide opportunity for mental and physical relaxation.
  • Cultivate a culture of psychological safety; this paves the way for dialogues with employees when you observe job performance concerns or indications that they are experiencing worry or stress.
